Research

CORDIS (Community Research and Development Information Service) ) is the essential source of information about the Community's research and innovation activities. It includes details of all current research programmes and has archive sites for earlier programmes. The weekly newsletter Cordis focus is available online and as a free subscription. Related publications are Euroabstracts, which provides more detailed information about research projects, European innovation, which concentrates on innovation policy, and RTD Info: magazine on European research. A special site is devoted to the Sixth Framework Programme (FP6) for Research, including news alerts, details of all the thematic areas and information about the developing European Research Area. It also includes a partner search facility and advice for preparing proposals and managing projects. News of the Seventh Framework Programme (FP7), which is currently in preparation, are also available.

Innovation Relay Centres are an official network set up by Cordis to advise organisations - especially small businesses - on technology and innovation. The SW regional centre is in Bristol.

The European Commission?s Directorate-General for Research website has information about all current programmes, including Bio-society which deals with socio-economic research in the life sciences and the implications of biotechnology. The Information society portal covers all aspects of EU involvement in the development of the information society.

Grants of the EU has details of all grants, funds and programmes managed by the EU, organised by policy area.

The Joint Research Centre, now a Directorate-General of the European Commission, consists of seven separate institutes, each with its own website. The JRC acts both as a scientific reference centre to support the work of the Commission and as a focal point for research in Europe.

The European Research Council was set up in 2007 as the first stage in the establishment of a European Research Area.

The European Science Foundation brings together leading scientists and funding organisations at European level to develop research initiatives. Its website includes details of current research programmes and publicly funded conferences.

The European Committee for Standardization provides information about CEN standards and also gives links to national standards bodies, including the British Standards Institution (BSI).

The European Environment Agency has its own web server with details of EU policies relating to the environment and links to other sources of environmental information

The European Patent Office site gives practical and legal information about European patent procedures and also provides links to national patent offices.

Space law is covered extensively by the European Space Agency's European Centre for Space Law. Arianespace is a well-illustrated site with full details of the Ariane European space programme.
